#119 Estates Theatre

Estates Theatre (Prague) 

Stavovske divadlo in Czech, was the site of the premier performance of Mozart's Don Giovanni, conducted by the composer himself in 1787.  The theater was restored and reopened on in 1991 on the 200th anniversary of Mozart's death.

The building, obviously, is gorgeous.  It is just what you think a grand European opera house should look like.  And the music was inspiring, soaring, heart-stoppingly beautiful.  Even if you don't think you are a fan of the opera this experience will change your mind.

The best thing about this:  the ticket was around $15.  When I went to the Santa Fe Opera it was about $80.  The lower price meant that the audience was filled with people from all walks of life - and included a lot of teenagers. I l love the idea that this is what they do for a fun night out in Prague.
